100% Formaldehyde-free formulations for safe, eco-friendly applications.
Innovative and Safe Formaldehyde-Free Chemistry from Encapsys
Formaldehyde is a nearly ubiquitous substance. It occurs naturally in the environment, is produced in the upper atmosphere and is even produced in the human body and in other living things as a natural consequence of metablolism.
It’s also an incredibly useful substance for chemists and for industry. It’s use extends to the production of such important materials as urea formaldehyde resin (used in many applications including adhesives and particle board), melamine resin (used in laminate flooring and kitchen utensils) and other useful chemical substances.
Nonetheless, exposure to elevated levels of formaldehyde may be dangerous. The U.S. National Cancer Institute reports:
In 1980, laboratory studies showed that exposure to formaldehyde could cause nasal cancer in rats. This finding raised the question of whether formaldehyde exposure could also cause cancer in humans. In 1987, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified formaldehyde as a probable human carcinogen under conditions of unusually high or prolonged exposure. Since that time, some studies of humans have suggested that formaldehyde exposure is associated with certain types of cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen. In 2011, the National Toxicology Program, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services, named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12th Report on Carcinogens.
Historically, formulations including formaldehyde have been used by microencapsulators. But, leading the industry, Encapsys has developed formaldehyde-free chemistries, while retaining, and even improving upon, the performance of formaldehyde-containing microcapsule formulations.
Formaldehyde-free microcapsules: Just one more innovation from scientists who care at Encapsys — the world leaders in microencapsulation technology.
